The Pripyat Hostels

The Pripyat Hostels

Hostels of the city Pripyat, though stay in the ruined condition (as a result of evacuation, attempts of the subsequent deactivation, disinfection, deratization and simply usual marauding), nevertheless keep peculiar atmosphere of the Soviet time habitation. In Pripyat hostels, as it seems to me, on small and insignificant “debris” of that time, it is possible to feel 80th years of the last century. The most part of hostels of Pripyat is in 1 microdistrict. Its the nearest to ChNPP, the very first area of a new city on river bank of Pripyat. Builders of a city and personnel of ChNPP here received their first habitation, moved from cabin-trailers of settlement Lesnoy near railway station Janiv.

Hostel - temporary habitation. Many soviet citizens have lived in such "temporary" habitation of tens years... But in Pripyat everything was not like that. The young exemplary soviet city of workers of nuclear station decorated with an order, for 16 years of existence has attached to "the first" microdistrict five more and already prepared a place for the sixth. So in Pripyat hostels were actually temporary habitation.

I never lived in a hostel, but I remember well, how when I was a kid, I came to visit my school friends living with parents in a hostel... The strict janitor woman on entrance, demanding the full report on the purpose and object of my visit, a smell of burnt onion from common kitchens, footfall and shouts of children in long narrow, dark corridors, water noise in common shower cubicle... It was strange and not clear to me world, living under its own laws and under the guidance of "hostel warden" (in Russian "commandant"). I never saw the hostel warden itself, but cautiously passed by his door with the strict tablet. From a word "commandant" blew as something strict and military.

By the way about kitchen smells... In Pripyat hostels there were no common kitchens and everyone went to a canteen attached to the housing.

Oh, what can I say, here in hostels even the water supply system was in many rooms (actually only with cold water). And some had even a toilet!

Well and in the end there is some photos of those "debris" of the past epoch which I have mentioned in the beginning of my story.
